I just experienced a scam from someone by the name of "Raymond Jackson". This individual contacted me to purchase a Short Sale and an REO property. He did not complete the offer paperwork properly but sent to me a check that appears like a "certified bank check" from a Canadian bank. The scam is you take that check put it in escrow then he claims he sent to much and wants money sent back to him. It's the same scam used with other groups but this time targeted to real estate. He would not produce a goverment issued identification, proof of funds, a legitimate phone number (you can buy phony phone numbers), and would only communicate by email. The FBI has been notified by my brokerage. The scary part is I found him doing this with two other agents both having my first name. One in Fort Myers and one in Hawaii. (That's a pretty far reaching net he's tossed). He made the mistake of sending me copies of other transactions by these agents. I called the one agent in Ft Myers & she knew of the scam and had him reported it to the FBI. The agent in Hawaii was unaware, already had approval from the REO bank offer, and didn't know the check was bad. BE CAREFUL OUT HERE ON THE NET!
I spoke with an attorney. Same scam, different professions. They buy lists of professions, doctors, attorneys, REALTORs, and target them with a slightly different tack. The interesting thing is that his email came first into my SPAM, but it just said "I am looking for a 3bedroom 2 bath home in your area, price range 200,000-300,000". Innocent enough. They are good. I am just glad I was able to give a heads up to the Hawaii REALTOR before that became more of a nightmare.
Thanks, Kathleen. I am a Realtor in Naples,FL and service this area including Bonita Springs and Estero. Where are you located? You mentioned Ft. Myers in your email. Kathy Wegwert, Keller Williams Elite Realty
